Agenda Items
- Plans
- Electronic Device Plan – SCC reviewed Electronic Device Plan @ https://midvalley.canyonsdistrict.org/device-policy/. No changes were made.
- Student Attendance Plan – SCC reviewed Student Attendance Plan @ https://midvalley.canyonsdistrict.org/attendance-policy/. No changes were made. We will continue Bike Bus to help students get to school.
- Review Stakeholder Feedback Survey – SCC reviewed our Stakeholder Feedback results. Midvalley rated higher than the district averages and lower than the elementary school averages. Discussion wondering what made stakeholders mark strongly disagree that it would be helpful to know why so we could respond.
- Recess before lunch proposal – Recess before lunch can lead to improved student behavior, increased consumption of food and nutrients, and decreased food waste. Scheduling recess before lunch also allows students to expend energy, work up an appetite, and then focus on eating a nutritious meal, which can also lead to better attention in afternoon classes.
Benefits for student nutrition- Increased consumption: Students consume more of their lunch, including more fruits, vegetables, calcium, and other nutrients.
- Reduced food waste: With a healthy appetite, students are less likely to waste food.
- Less urgency to eat: Students are not rushed to finish their meal to get to recess, allowing more time to eat and focus on the food.
Benefits for student behavior and academics
- Improved cafeteria behavior: Students are calmer and have better behavior in the cafeteria.
- Increased classroom attentiveness: Children are often more focused and attentive during afternoon classes.
- Decreased discipline issues: Some schools report fewer discipline referrals and less need for supervision in the cafeteria.
- Fewer accidents: With less urgency, students may also be less likely to have accidents during lunch.
Other benefits
- Healthier eating habits: The combination of increased consumption and less waste can help promote healthier eating behaviors.
- Better overall well-being: The benefits to behavior, academics, and nutrition contribute to a child’s overall mental and physical health.
- Less physical discomfort: In hot climates, having recess before lunch can prevent children from running around with a full stomach, which can cause discomfort
Midvalley teachers, recess team, lunch team, and School Community Council all agree to try out having recess before lunch as the other Canyons elementary schools who have made this change have found success. We will begin our transition on December 15th so that we can fully implement starting January 5th. This information will be shared in our next Husky Happenings.
